Food is a driving factor of change and participation: what we grow, eat, and waste impacts on our health and on environmental, social, and economic justice. We all have the right to sufficient food, food and climate security, so we must collaborate to eliminate the causes of malnutrition and to create the conditions for living in harmony with nature.
With these points in mind, the Food Wave – Empowering Urban Youth for Climate Action has the aim to raise awareness among people aged 15 to 35 years about the importance of sustainable production practices and consumption habits in urban contexts, as well as to mitigate the effects of climate change, encourage activism and engagement, and provide tools for influencing decision makers. In this way, young people will be able to guide the global transition toward a sustainable food system by 2030.
Food Wave intends to reach 15 million young people online and offline through activism, workshops, discussion forums, international exchange, street actions, art competitions, and film festivals held in partner cities in 15 European countries and one Latin American country. The project includes campaigns, research, and studies on food and climate change.
In addition to the films and events during CinemAmbiente, other Food Wave initiatives scheduled for 2022 in Turin include: artistic-creative projects promoted jointly with the partners in Bijcem (https://www.bjcem.org/food-wave/) and with the City of Turin through the Office of International Cooperation and Peace, which has selected projects for street actions by young people’s associations for food security and availability.
The four-year program was launched on 1 December 2019; it is headed by the City of Milan and co-financed by the European Union Development Education and Awareness Raising (Europeaid DEAR) program.
The Food Wave project is coordinated by the City of Milan in partnership with 16 local agencies, non governmental organizations in 16 European countries and in one Latin American country.
